abstract="This paper describes how increasing physical activity among children and adolescents in the United States through programs such as Safe Routes to School is a top public health priority that is intended to help address complex problems such as pediatric obesity. While valuable, these efforts may increase the incidence of pedestrian crashes involving children due to increased at-risk travel exposure. Fundamental epidemiologic information necessary to anticipate, mitigate, and potentially prevent these injuries through improved vehicle, road, and community design is limited since the majority of pedestrian injury prevention research has focused on adults. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the impact conditions of child pedestrian crashes in the United States using nationally representative crash data.
