abstract="This document outlines the concept of replacing the conventional gas analysis train in fire calorimeters, with a mass spectrometer (MS). This concept is motivated by a desire to improve upon aspects of the conventional technique. These are cumbersome equations, time delays, time lags and 'noisy' results. The theoretical advantages and disadvantages of using a MS are presented. This document should form the basis of an experimental programme to value the worth of the concept.<p />",
