abstract="Recent development in the use of borates as fire retardants in halogen-free polymers will be reviewed Particular emphasis will be on the use of Firebrake zinc borates (2ZnO center dot 3B(2)O(3)center dot 3 5H(2)O, 4ZnO center dot B2O3 center dot H2O, and 2ZnO center dot 3B(2)O(3)) in polyolefins. The interaction/beneficial effects of using zinc borate in the presence of magnesium hydroxide and/or alumina trihydroxide will be presented The results of using co-additives such as silicone/silica, phosphates, and nanoclay in enhancing the zinc borate/metal hydrate fire test performance in Cone Calorimeter and other fire tests will also be presented.<p />",
