abstract="The many changes in truck engine displacement and power have indicated a need to reassess current climbing-lane design practices. This study presents new data characterizing trucks (and combinations) on grades. Field data collected at several locations in central and east Texas were analyzed and speed versus distance curves were developed for a range of grade profiles. From an evaluation of the speed versus distance curves for the designated critical-truck class, composite critical-length-of-grade charts were derived for an 88-km/h (55-mph) approach speed and a range of speed-reduction values.<p />",
