abstract="The purpose of this study was to investigate driver performance at selected sites under two types of left-turn markings and to determine which type produced better driver performance. Type A marking is the typical left-turn channelization with the recommended design of letter markings and arrows applicable to lane-use control. Type B marking consists of two solid yellow lines in the form of parallel reverse curves. Type B identifies the part a left-turning vehicle should follow and type A shows only an open entry space for access to the left-turn lane. In general, the results of field observation show that type B marking produces better driver performance and is therefore recommended for use over type A. Type B is felt to convey an immediate understanding of the situation that will provide for more uniform traffic flow, reduce the potential accident rate, and add to roadway safety in the long run.<p />",
