abstract="A training program developed by the Santa Fe Railway to train individuals for the position of locomotive engineer on today's railroads is described. The program uses the traditional method of the fireman-engineer relationship in conjunction with classroom instruction and locomotive and train simulation. Its ultimate objective is to produce people who have the best possible qualifications to operate locomotives and handle trains safely and efficiently. The Santa Fe Railway feels that standardization of instruction is the key to reaching this goal and that centralized training and the use of simulation have proved to be the best way to achieve standardization.<p />",
