abstract="The objective of this study was to apply a computer model to evaluate, design, and control alternatives to improve safety at intersections of multilane major highways with two-lane minor roads. The NETSIM network-flow simulation model was used in this research. Measures of effectiveness considered in evaluating alternatives included average delay per vehicle and number of traffic conflicts. Several modifications were made to the NETSIM model to incorporate the calculations of the measures of effectiveness. Field studies were conducted for gap acceptance, traffic delay, and traffic conflicts, and the results were used to substantiate the model's validity. Different design and operational countermeasures for stop-controlled and for signalized intersections were evaluated by a group of simulation experiments.<p />",
