abstract="Analysis of West German accident statistics have shown that children between the ages of six and nine years are especially at risk as cyclists. The paper describes the development of a series of recommendations based upon the type of traffic situation to which the children would be subjected in a particular area. Investigation provided no models for didactic units for teaching children in conventional conditions. The author believes that parents have sole responsibility for deciding upon the child's use of the bicycle and assessing the amount of risk they regard as being reasonable. Four categories of traffic conditions are defined to make the assignment for the teacher easier. These categories range from a village where children of 6 and 7 years could cycle without much restriction to urban areas where they should not cycle on the roads under any circumstance. The selected approach is that the teacher has a test which forms a basis for a brochure to be jointly drawn up between teacher and children as a &quot;parents book&quot; made by the child. Tuition is related to local situations supported by practical measures and materials. An example of a practical course, for 5th and 6th year pupils at an elementary school is also given.
