abstract="A survey of traffic paint was conducted by questionnaires which were sent to the state highway departments. Replies were received from 34 states. Estimated quantities of white and yellow road marking paints used by 33 states indicate that about 11% more whites and about 9% more yellows were used in 1950 than in 1949. A great increase in the use of retro-reflective road markings is indicated. In types of opaque white pigments preferred, both the states and the manufacturers contacted rate titanium pigments first, followed by zinc oxide and lithopone. Among the extender pigments, magnesium silicate has first preference. About half of the groups reporting indicated a preference for the alkyd resin types, and about a third of both groups reported a preference for the phenolic resin varnish types. The phenolic varnish- dispersion resin type was voted as third in importance. Both the highway departments and the traffic paint producers indicated that improved service life was the most important property of the paints.<p />",
