abstract="The U.S. and Canada are experiencing an on-going opioid epidemic, with a growing number of opioid-addicted patients and fatal overdoses. We discuss the similarities and differences between the Netherlands and the U.S. in the prescription, use and abuse of opioid analgesics. We conclude that a similar situation is not anticipated in the Netherlands despite the large increase in the use of opioid analgesics. Vigilance is advisable, but this may not and should not compromise adequate pain control.<p /> <p>Language: nl</p>",
