abstract="This paper presents and discusses the results of a qualitative study developed with 24 young Cape-Verdean currently living in Portugal, 13 girls and 13 boys, between 19 and 30 years old (M = 21; SD=.125). In order to obtain, throughout discourses, their representations about gender social relations and about violence in juvenile and adult intimacy, three focus groups with eight participants each were organized (a female one, a male one and a mixed one). The collected data suggests that their representations about gender social relations and about violence in intimacy, both in Cape Verde and Portugal, tend to converge into the recognition of power asymmetries between sexes, which seems to promote violence in dating and marital relationships. However, representations are different in what concerns to social reaction to inequality and violence. While Cape Verde is described as a country where violence against women is legitimated and trivialized, Portugal is characterized as a society with lower levels of acceptation of gender violence.
