abstract="The use of hand-held mobile telephones is known to distract drivers and cause accidents, and recent laws that have responded to this fact will shape the development of technology and alter habits. However, at issue here is whether these laws are appropriately directed and formed. The author posits that drastic steps should be taken by drivers and motor carriers in order to ensure compliance with regulations. The first section of this article discusses recent federal regulations prohibiting commercial motor vehicle drivers from using hand-held mobile telephones, as well as listing prohibited and permitted activities, along with penalties for violations. The second section focuses on an evaluation of regulations, and the final section offers drivers of commercial motor vehicles and motor carriers various recommendations.
