abstract="Mark Begich, a senator from Alaska, discusses the suicide epidemic and how it disproportionately affects Alaska Natives, particularly in rural Alaska. He has been working with constituents, experts, and survivors of suicide to look at ways to end this epidemic. A new strategic investment in suicide prevention research can save lives. To reduce the cases of suicide nationwide, the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention suggests conducting research on the factors that lead to suicide and its prevention. Begich introduced the Suicide Prevention Research INnovaTion Act (SPRINT Act) to direct the National Institute of Mental Health to conduct research on mental illness and the risk of self-harm, suicide, and violence, especially in rural communities that experience a shortage of mental health services. Funding medical research will lead to quality prevention and treatment and could help all those at risk for suicide.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
