abstract="Children's resistance to adult efforts to socialize them is normal. However, in the case of students with emotional and behavioral disorders, this resistance sometimes becomes so extreme as to be maladaptive. Using excerpts from structured interviews conducted by teachers, this paper discusses three thought and behavior patterns commonly used by students to justify behavior teachers consider inappropriate: denial, projection, and rationalization. Suggestions are made about how to respond to these defensive behavior patterns when they are identified.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
