abstract="Many professionals are faced with the intricate task of providing services to severely handicapped children. These children are typically described as autistic, severely mentally retarded, and multiply handicapped. There are increasing accounts of the heterogeneity of these groups and confusion over the boundaries of the conditions. This paper presents clinical descriptions of various severe handicapping conditions and proposes that severe developmental disabilities is a useful umbrella term.
