abstract="In extending models to describe power relations among nations, simplifying assumptions must be made. The state as an organization interacts with other organizations in a loose world system, which has emergent properties distinct from those of the national system, the state. Dependency and exchange models are critically analyzed; their limitations and merits are expounded. The works of Emerson, Blau, Boulding, and other exchange theorists are synthesized in order to build a theory of international power. Power relations among national states are regulated by three categories of mechanisms : threat, exchange, and integration. Some basic theoretical propositions are developed. Modern historical illustrations, a research strategy, and tentative testing of theorems are suggested.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>",
