abstract="A retrospective analysis of patients with penetrating injuries who attended the Accident and Emergency department between March and September 1986 was undertaken. More detailed data from the identical period in 1991 were recorded. The total numbers of patients reviewed in 1986 and 1991 were similar, but there was a marked increase in the incidence of penetrating injuries (31 to 94 respectively). Of the 94 patients, 75 had stab injuries and 19 had gunshot wounds. Young, unemployed men were more commonly affected. Serious injuries were uncommon and only 3 patients died. 49 patients were referred to surgical specialities and 39 of these were admitted to hospital. Common times of attendance were identified. The implications of these data on staff levels, staff training and prevention of such injuries are discussed.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
