abstract="Each year in the United States, more than 50,000 children are injured as pedestrians, of whom approximately 1,800 die, 18,000 are admitted to the hospital, and 5,000 have significant long-term sequelae. Prevention must rest on a multifaceted approach at the local, state, and national level and should include pedestrian skills training programs, parent education, legislation, environmental modifications, and vehicle design changes.",
