abstract="In June 2016 the interdisciplinary research project entitled "Crime and case analysis of highly expressive targeted violence (TARGET)", which was promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), was completed. Within the framework of a subproject of the University of Gießen, the "Criminological analysis of rampage killings" involving young and adult rampage killers in comparison to offenders who had carried out multiple killings was carried out. The results show that as a rule rampage killers act alone and want to attract a great deal of attention by spectacular multiple killings. Young and adult rampage killers show some common features but also many differences. The characteristic feature of rampage killers is that they seek extensive media attention. During the crime the killers attempt to kill many people in order to demonstrate their contempt and hatred of a certain group or of society as a whole. The incident, which results in many dead and injured, deeply unsettles the surviving victims and those directly affected in addition to the population and professional groups, such as the police, rescue services and medical personnel. The use of firearms is problematic because of the high numbers of victims. The crimes typically instigate further crimes and many threats, which are not all harmless. The intensive media coverage of rampages and terrorist acts are triggers for mentally unstable people who are seeking attention and persons with an inclination towards such crimes who are driven forward in their planning of a criminal act.

Language: de
",
