abstract="The sight distance requirements for large trucks at railroad-highway grade crossings are compared with current AASHTO policy. The key elements affecting sight distance requirements include driver characteristics such as perception-reaction time and vehicle characteristics such as vehicle speed, length, acceleration, and braking distances. The results from sensitivity analyses are compared with current policy and are summarized for each sight distance consideration. The findings imply that current criteria for sight distance along the highway and along the tracks for a moving highway vehicle may not be adequate for large trucks. In contrast, the current AASHTO values for sight distance along the tracks for a stopped highway vehicle adequately reflect current truck performance capabilities.
