abstract="This paper addresses the design of transitions between W-beam or thrie-beam approach guardrail and rigid bridge rail parapets or wingwalls. Crash test evaluations of selected current designs and new modified designs were accomplished with 4,500-lb (2000-kg) cars striking at 60 mph (95 km/hr) and a 25-degree angle.

RESULTS of these evaluations included the identification of desirable transition characteristics and the evaluation of a large number of designs for both straight and tapered bridge ends.

CONCLUSIONS and recommendations are offered for satisfactory guardrail-bridge rail transition performance.
