abstract="Lavigne and Faier-Routman (1992) published their critical meta-analysis at a pivotal point in the evolution of our research on adjustment outcomes in pediatric chronic illness. Their fundamental question-are children with chronic health conditions indeed at risk for &quot;psychopathology?&quot; Relatedly, they addressed the question as to whether or not differences existed between different disease groups in terms of adjustment outcomes. The noncategorical approach (e.g., Pless & Perrin, 1985), which argued that the commonalities across disease groups far outweighed differences, stood in relatively stark contrast to those that argued for more disease-specific approaches (e.g., Rolland, 1987).
