abstract="There has been a longstanding interest in relating road accidents and traffic flows, since such relationships have many useful applications in the field of both highway and traffic engineering. These applications include the improvement of design standards for new highways, the identification of unusually hazardous conditions and the prediction of the effect of traffic flow changes on accident occurrence. This study consisted of a statistical analysis of data relating to accidents, traffic flows and road type in the vicinity of the Christchurch Southern arterial in New Zealand. The final aim was to establish statistical relatihonships between accidents and traffic flow for roads with different types of carrigeway and adjacent land use.<p />",
