abstract="The route preferences of adult cyclists undertaking utility trips was studied using examples from Britain, Canada and around the world. The study aims to suggest the reason for the preferences and discusses the consequences for planners and engineers. Although there is little consistency in the way the figures for use of main roads by cyclists are currently expressed, it is clear that they are an important part of cyclists' routes, even when alternatives are provided. The evidence presented suggests that the reasons for this include location of destination, limited route knowledge, directness of available routes, safety, quality of infrastructure and ease of travel.<p />",
