abstract="Since 1974, Nottinghamshire County Council has introduced over 25 pedestrian refuge schemes on urban roads in the County. The schemes have been promoted as having distinct advantages for improving the safety of pedestrians. This article examines the performance of these schemes and is divided into three parts. Firstly, it evaluates their potential for reducing accidents and their suitability for use as a Traffic Calming device. Secondly, it assesses the residents' opinions of the schemes. Thirdly, it concludes with a summary of the results, and compares the objective performance of the schemes with the residents' subjective opinions of them. <p>Language: en</p>",
