abstract="Simulated and actual crash tests were conducted on a New Jersey breakaway sign structure. The tests were aimed at isolating and modifying those aspects of the system that were causing excessive damage to components as a result of vehicular impact and thus made it necessary to return the sign structure to the shop for repairs rather than reerect it in the field with a few parts changed. Before beneficial modifications were incorporated into the standard specifications, full-scale instrumented vehicular crash tests were also conducted, which confirmed that the modified system functioned well and demonstrated compliance with the latest safety standards as specified in NCHRP Report 230.
