abstract="We read the article by Kowalski et al1 on the recovery of consciousness in 17 470 patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) with interest. Eighty-two percent of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) showed recovery of consciousness after clinical rehabilitation, defying the often ill-informed therapeutic nihilism that families of many such patients encounter.
