abstract="Some specific steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of battery failure and major incidents like fires and explosions, are discussed. Battery should be kept clean from acid because it can cause the battery to ground to the conductive steel battery rack where the battery is held. External electrolyte can be eliminated by the use of a non-hazardous neutralizing cleaner that will not damage the battery plastics or cause employee exposure or environmental concerns. When attaching battery and charger cables, it should be ensured that the methods used will not result in damage to cable's copper strands. Exposed and damaged wires are potential source of arcs and sparks. Care in stripping insulation from the ends of the cable will prevent damage to the copper strands. Manufacturer's torque specifications should be followed and torque should be rechecked periodically. Proper battery operating conditions and maintenance practices are key to preventing incidents and regulator violations.   <p>Language: en</p>",
