abstract="European Council Directive 92/57/EEC on the implementation of minimum safety and health requirements at temporary or mobile construction sites does not take account of railway-specific concerns. Safety at track construction sites is regulated in Europe at individual country level. With a view to European harmonization, what is needed now is to draw up uniform guidelines for risk assessment and appropriate standards for the requisite safety precautions at track construction sites. A major contribution towards the drafting of uniform guidelines to be published in European standards is being made by Working Group 39 &quot;Safety protection on the track during work&quot; under the auspices of the European Committee for Standardisation's Technical Committee for Railway Applications, CEN/TC 256. The article describes the terms of reference of WG 39 and of the German standards body NA 087-01-09-AA under the Railway Vehicle Standardisation Committee FSF, through which its sponsors can contribute to the work on European standards being undertaken by WG 39.<p />",
