abstract="Different design alternatives of an information and communication system with different degrees of compatibility regarding (system)ergonomic criteria are compared in a static driving simulator study with 30 subjects. Especially the early phase of the learning curve is considered. The applied design of a static driving simulator study proves to be an adequate method for a differentiated assessment of design layout for such systems within the car. The results show that a higher degree of compatibility leads to significant improvements in the safety of operation while driving. Furthermore the necessity to assess design alternatives regarding task performance, the effects on glance behaviour and driving performance is pointed out. It is not sufficient to consider just one assessment criterion.<p />",
