abstract="The article reports results from the use of the laerdal self-instructing system introduced in Norway. The system is based on tape-recorded instructions, illustrations and an instruction booklet. Students practised on a training manikin using first aid equipment listed in the article and recommended by IAAM, LRCS and WHO. Driving school students were taught in classes of up to 15 receiving a total time of 135 minutes instruction and practice.

RESULTS from a performance test showed that 97 per cent were able to achieve effective mouth-to-mouth artificial resuscitation and 85 per cent were successful using the mouth-to-mask method. Other tests indicated that the self-instructing course could be used by non-professional first aid instructors to efficiently teach road accident first aid in three lessons.

Language: en
",
