abstract="Linkage of the Land Transport Traffic Accident Report Form (TARF) data and the mortality data maintained by the Department of Health's Health Information Service (HIS) would considerably enhance our ability to describe the nature and extent of the fatal motorcycle traffic crash problem in New Zealand., This study attempted to determine the completeness of the TARF file by matching the records to an equivalent set of HIS data. In addition a strategy for linking the two databases was identified. Records were matched on the following variables: surname and initials, age, sex, rider status (driver or pillion), date of birth, and occupation. All of the 119 HIS source cases eligible for matching were enventually able to be matched to their target records on the TARF database. In four cases additional information had to be sought from the files held by the Coroner's Court., Within certain limitations, the completeness of the TARF data relative to the HIS mortality data was considered to be excellent. It should be emphasised that, while this research has shown that a high proportion of fatal cases can be matched, the success rate for non-fatal cases would be substantially less.   <p>Language: en</p>",
