abstract="Reinforced earth is a composite material formed by the association of earth and reinforcement whereby the friction between the earth and reinforcement mobilizes the tensile strength of the reinforcement. The behavior of reinforced earth has been the subject of considerable research notably at the central laboratory of the French Highway Administration. The paper discusses the results of this research and of various field investigations of the forces acting within the reinforced earth mass. Methods of analysis of retaining walls for internal and external stability under various failure modes are discussed. Materials specification and controls, erection procedures and cost are summarized also. <p />",
