abstract="While the factors promoting suicidal behavior in the elderly are fairly well known, few studies have addressed the fate of elderly subjects after a suicide attempt. We conducted a one-year follow-up study in about 38 cases of suicide attempts aged over 65 years in order to elucidate the outcome better. The study demonstrated the physical and psychic fragility of the subjects, reflected in a high mortality rate. It also enabled differentiation of two types of elderly suicide attempts. In some attempts, there was a strong suicidal intent in a context of major depression but the suicide attempt was unsuccessful. For others, the suicide attempt was less marked by the intent to die and reflected a call for help.<p /><p>Language: fr</p>",
