abstract="Nowadays, suicide attempts are an unsolved problem of public health care. Suicide attempts are also one of the three main causes of death for adolescents in occidental countries, and they suppose a high potential loss of years of life. Suicide and parasuicide rates modify depending on source, which is probably due to methodological differences and also sociocultural factors. <br><br>RESULTS of the WHO-EURO Multicentre Study on Parasuicide suggest that data of different centres grouped together may be unrepresentative. Sociocultural factors can be implicated in geographical variations concerning suicide behaviour; indeed, social events have induced historical changes in suicide behaviour rates. Currently, highest prevalences of parasuicide behaviours are presented at United States, Scandinavian and east-european countries; medium rates at central Europe, Netherlands and United Kingdom; and lowest prevalences at mediterranean, arabian and latin american areas. Suicide behaviour in urban and rural areas is recording essential and interesting changes in last years.
