abstract="OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate prevalence and differences regarding unipolar and bipolar affective disorders in a clinical population.

METHODS: Based upon a sample of 18 846 psychiatric in-patients of the Bezirksklinikum Regensburg between 1989 and 1999, data of the psychiatric basic documentation system (DGPPN-BADO) of 2644 patients (14.0%) with unipolar depression (10.9 %) and bipolar affective disorders (3.1 %) were analysed.

RESULTS: Patients with bipolar affective disorders (BAS) fall ill 10 years earlier than patients with unipolar depression (UD), they have higher number of hospital stays and longer cumulative length of stay. At admission they are stated to be significantly more ill. Patients with BAS show suicide attempts and comorbid alcoholism more often. During in-patient care they receive mood stabilizers significantly more frequent than patients with UD, whereas no differences were found regarding psychotherapy and socio-therapy. At discharge patients with BAS show greater deficits in their psychosocial capability than patients with UD do.

CONCLUSION: Although patients with BAS have a more severe course of illness, they can be treated in the same effective and efficient manner like patients with UD.

Language: de
",
