abstract="In the sample of 241 adult epileptic patients the WAIS-R scale was used. As dependent, response variables, the full scale IQ, verbal IQ and performance IQ were used. As explaining variables 14 following variables were considered: age, education, marital status, onset of disease, lasting of illness, frequency of grand mal attacks, frequency of other attacks, retirement caused by invalidity, contact with psychiatry, subjective need for help from psychologist or psychiatrist, responses validity, suicidal tendencies, relation to alcohol, and the investigation circumstances, i.e. investigation during hospitalisation vs. investigation of outpatients. The multidimensional regression models to predict the responses in the full IQ, verbal IQ and performance IQ scales were constructed, separately for men and women. In one-dimensional analyses, 12 variables of 14 predictors (with exception of variables "age" and ́subjective need for help from psychologist or psychiatrist") showed statistically significant relation to intellectual functioning. Models explained 37 - 50 % of variance in responses. On the basis of data analysis the following basic conclusions can be formulated: 1. The relatively small role is played by typical "epileptological" variables. Only the predictors "onset of disease" in men only, and also "retirement caused by invalidity" in men only, enter the regression models. In women, the influence of epilepsy is better explained when evaluated on inpatient basis. 2. Prominent role is played by "sociological" variables: education and marital status (the ability to enter marriage at appropriate age in men, and the maintenance of marriage in women), and by "psychiatric" variables (suicidal tendencies in women interacting with education: women who admitted suicidal tendencies showed higher intellectual efficiency than women claiming that suicide is out of questions). 3. Numerous differences between genders were registered. 4. The regressive models for the full scale IQ, verbal IQ and performance IQ differ.

Language: cs
",
