abstract="Experiments were performed wherein thin-walled square tubes of aluminium were subjected to latcral compression and sandwiched between two rigid platens in an Instron machine and under the impact of a drop hammer. Tube sizes were varied and these were tested in as received and annealed conditions. These tests were also repeated on Uie tubes which were filled with polyurethane foam and Kail wood. The histories of their deformation and their load-compression cines are presented, and effect thereon of various parameters is discussed. Based on observed mechanism of deformation, a simple analysis which considers the formation of plastic hinges is presented for the computation of first peak load as well as post-collapse load-compression curves. The material of the tube is considered to be rigid-plastic. The results thus computed match the experiments very well. <p>Language: en</p>",
