abstract="The majority of people in France are currently in favor of legislation for regulatory control of euthanasia. Public opinion however takes for granted to aspects which are neither self-evident nor fully distinguished. The first is that each individual has the right to die. The second is that there is a right to help die. A critical examination of these two rights leads to questions concerning the fundamental moral and political aspects of life in society. It also highlights the fact that the right to die lacks a moral foundation and that the right of help die, if legally instituted, is in contradiction with the fundamental principals of law itself. © 2004 Elsevier Masson SAS.
