abstract="Suicide attempt is a common psychiatric emergency. Cases assessed in Mental Health Unit in Talavera de la Reina from 1990 to 1998 were analized. Mean rate was 55,3 per 100,000 inhabitants and year.

METHODS more frequently employed were self-poisoning (78,6%), followed by cuttings (9,5%). Past history of psychiatric treatment was found in 71,44%. Only 53,33% were the patient's first suicide attempt. In more than 60% of attempts age ranged from 18 to 35 years. A precipitating factor was mentioned in 64%, most commonly problems with family or problems with couple. There were not differences between seasons or weekdays; only attempts related to problems with couple were more frequent on Sundays. The most common diagnosis were adjustment disorders, depression and personality disorder. 47,5% were admitted as in-patients.
