abstract="The aim of the study was to assess the importance of some personality traits such as self esteem and aggression as risk factors for suicide in adolescence. The study included 100 patients of both sexes, mean age 15.76 years, hospitalized at Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University Department of Psychiatry, Osijek University Hospital Center in Osijek in 2006 and 2007. Study patients were divided into experimental group of 50 patients admitted for attempted suicide attempts and control group of 50 patients admitted for different psychiatric disorders. Suicide risk was estimated by the Pierce Suicide Intent Scale, the diagnosis was based on DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, and all patients and parents signed their informed consent for inclusion in the study. Patients filled out the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and Žužul Aggression Scale. Suicidal patients had significantly lower self-esteem and significantly higher total and all types of aggression. Low self-esteem and high total and all types of aggression are significant risk factors for suicide in adolescence. Primary care physicians, teachers, parents and adolescents have a role in early recognition of the risk factors and the entire society's priority is to create living conditions without reasons for violence, insecurity and loss of self-esteem.<p /><p>Language: hr</p>",
