abstract="The main purpose of this study iwas to investigate the frequency of eating disorders in the adolescents aged 15-18 years. Besides, our aim was to search for the correlations between eating disorders, socio-demographic properties, self-harming behaviors, and suicidal tendencies. The sampling size consisted of 1000 students aged between 15, and 18 years who were attending Eyüp College, Fenerbahçe College and Saint- Benoit College during the academic year of 2005. During this research, in order to study the eating habits of the adolescents "Eating Attitude Test" (EAT-40) consisting of 32 questions inquiring the related properties with eating habits was used. The responses to the items of the questionaire EAT- 40 were evaluated and those having 30 points and more were defined to cases with eating disorders. The groups with normal eating habits or eating disorders were statistically analysed with chi-square, ANOVA and Student-t tests. As a result of this research, the ratio of the adolescents with eating disorders to the total number of participants was 7 percent. This ratio was 10.2 % for the girls and 3.8 % for the boys. Those with eating disorders had a tendency to self-damage (11,4 %,), commiting suicide (10.8 %). suicidal thoughts (13.8 %),%) and also 17.6 % of them had previously attemped suicide. There was no sex differences among groups as for the incidence of self-damage but for all of the other variables of the suicide the incidence for the girls were higher than the boys. As a result, adolescents with eating disorders had a higher risk for the tendency to self-damage and suicidal attempts than those without.

Language: tr
",
