abstract="Peruvian writer José Maria Arguedas' claim of representing Andean reality in his literary work was challenged during his life. After his suicide in 1969, his last novel El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo was published. The story, in which death constantly threatens the characters, is built on a series of "scene-discourses" contemplated in this article as performative acts. Likewise, this work suggests that the novelist's suicide can be considered an act 0f performance as well, which is projected into the fictional work, and operates as an element of veridiction, reaffirming the author's identity as an authentic representative of Andean reality. Through the lens of performativity, it is possible to explore the connections between truth, trascendence and suicide inscribed in the last work of Arguedas. © 2018 Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispanicos.
