abstract="In this interview from April 2019, Antônio Geraldo da Silva, president of the Asociación Psiquiátrica de América Latina (APAL) (Latin American Psychiatric Association), describes current issues in mental health and psychiatric practice in Latin America. He examines the principal aspects of care provision, patient support, and research, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of psychiatry in the region. Considering some historical dimensions of medicine and psychiatry, he highlights the issues that are most pressing today. Strengthening the relationship between France and Latin America may be beneficial for both regions in the development of psychiatry as a science.
