abstract=""Marine casualties" include any event or occurrence in which a vessel is involved that results in damage to or by that vessel, be it vessel cargo, gear, or apparel, or loss of life of or injury to any person. In order to protect the marine environment and promote maritime safety and security, marine casualties are investigated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The authors examine the process of marine casualty investigation, comparing it to the systematic approach of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These include generating a timeline, conducting causal analysis, conducting human error analysis, drawing conclusions, and making safety recommendations. The Coast Guard has adopted the IMO's code for investigated incident fact and cause determination so that the constant danger of overlooking or losing critical information during a marine investigation is avoided.
