abstract="The majority of cases of voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED) concerns contexts in which severe diseases with concomitant dwindling needs are present. In that case, VSED resembles the rejection of a medical treatment. In addition to this main difference to suicide, however, within VSED there are also situations in which aspects must be considered that have been developed in the context of suicide prevention. After defining the relevant terms, courses of action for dealing with different death wishes are outlined and recommendations are provided that are geared to possibilities of prevention in the context of VSED. © Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik, Basel. All rights reserved.<p /><p>Language: de</p>",
