abstract="OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe and determine the relationship between suicidal ideation and family functionality in sample of Adolescents of the Colombian Caribbean coast. <br><br>METHODS: Descriptive-correlational non-experimental and cross-sectional study. The sample was formed by 435 teenagers of both sexes, between 12 and 17 years who belong to private and public schools at Atlantic Department. Suicidal Ideation Scale (CES-D-IS) and the scale of family functioning (family APGAR) were used. <br><br>RESULTS: The presence of suicidal ideation in the female gender was reported as 69.7% and 30.3% associated with the male gender. A frequency of 250 (P: 57,471) was found associated with some level of Family Dysfunction in the sample. Finally, a significant positive relationship was found at (P< 0.01) bilateral levels between family functionality and the alert or risk of suicidal ideation. <br><br>CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that family dysfunction increase the risk of suicidal ideation. The role of the family as a protective factor or as a possible risk factor for disposing young people towards suicide is discussed. © 2020, Venezuelan Society of Pharmacology and Clinical and Therapeutic Pharmacology.
