abstract="As of January 31, 2022, ten countries have legislated in favor of active assistance in dying after political, ethical, and social debates. This article reviews the legislative history of these countries (Switzerland, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, and Austria) and describes the framework prescribed by each law to regulate and control the practice of euthanasia or assisted suicide. The aim is to highlight the arguments that are essential for the establishment and implementation of a law, as well as the common eligibility criteria and safeguards, with particular attention paid to the criteria relating to psychiatric illness. © 2022 Lavoisier.
