abstract="As part of a larger study of all homicides in northern Sweden during 1970-81 (n==156) this paper analyses those 16 cases of homicide that were followed by the offender's suicide. Two women and 14 men killed 22 victims. Most killings were related to a long-standing problematic marital situation with anticipated or manifest separation. Five of the offenders probably had a major mental disorder, and five were drug abusers. Most acts seemed to serve the purpose of regaining control of a deteriorating relationship, whereas the other cases concerned offenders facing increasing social pressure for other reasons. The literature on the subject shows that the dominant features of cases of homicide-suicide are similar regardless of time period and culture in study. © 1995 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
