abstract="Abnormal serotonin function has been implicated in suicidality through the concept of impulsive aggression. Platelet serotonin aggregation is a possible valid peripheral marker of central serotonin function. A group of male prisoners considered at risk of suicide and hence under special observations, is compared with a control male group. None of the subjects was taking anti-depressant medications. A marked reduction in serotonin aggregation is noted in those with a history of auto-aggressive acts compared both with controls and with those tests who do not have such a history. The implications and drawbacks of the study are discussed with regard to the possibility of identifying a specific biological marker for a pre-disposition towards suicide.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
